No.40 Squadron Boeing 727-100C No. 40 Squadron was formed on 1st June 1943. It was tasked with re-supply of New Zealand's war effort in the South Pacific Region. Using Douglas DC3's, the unit formed the nucleus of National Airways Corporation (NAC) at the end of the war. During the 50's and 60's, the squadron operated Handley Page Hastings and Douglas DC6 throughout the world carrying service passengers. Today No. 40 Squadron operates two Boeing 727-100C in this role. These aircraft which entered service in 1981 provide medium to long range transport for the carriage of personnel and equipment from all three Services. They are regularly used for the carriage of VIP's (including Royalty) within New Zealand and carriage of Ministerial and Trade Missions all around the world. The Boeings are fitted with a large cargo door and strengthened floor in order to carry bulky supplies and heavy equipment. They are crewed by two pilots, a flight engineer, and up to four cabin crew.
